He walked out of the room and Susie and Bill sat there quietly, hoping
that it was a dream and they would wake up.
Susie started to speak, then she fell to her knees and started
yelling at God, “Why?” She cried.
“Why?” Bill bent
down and pulled her close, “Don’t Susie,” He said.
“Don’t blame God, you know He has a reason for everything.
You know we should not question Him.
We prayed and asked Him not to let her suffer, and she is Susie.”
“I know Bill, I know, but I just can’t stand the thought of
life without her. I don’t
know if I can do it, Bill.” He
wrapped his arms around her and said, “You’re not alone, Susie.
I’m here and we have to be brave for Sarah.
We have to take what time she has left and make it a happy time for
her, lets plan that tea party, lets give her a lot of memories to take
with her, and happy ones for us to hold onto.”
When Bill and Susie got back to Sarah’s room, she was awake.
“Mommy,” She moaned
very low, “I'm hungry.” Susie
kissed her on the head. “Well,
that’s good to hear, Sweetie. What
would you like to eat?” “A
cheeseburger from McDonalds,” She said.
“That sounds really good,”
Said Bill, “I’ll go get us all one.”
While Bill was gone Sarah said, “Mommy, while I was sleeping I saw
that beautiful lady again, the one named Doris.”
“You did?” Said Susie, trying not to cry.
“Yes, Mommy and she said that there are lots of people there who
are waiting to meet me.” Susie
turned and walked to the window so Sarah wouldn’t see the tears that
filled her eyes. "I told
her that you and Daddy would miss me, I said, I’m the only little girl
you have and that you love me so much, and besides, what would happen to
all my dollies? Who would have
tea parties with them?” Then
she giggled and said, “Anyway, tomorrow is my birthday and I have to
have my tea party, and I want to go to Build A Bear at the mall.”
Susie turned around and sat beside Sarah on her bed and said,
“What if we have your tea party here Sarah? We can have your friends
come, Stacy, Sally, Jane, Carol and Paula.
I’m sure they would love to see you.”
“Could we Mommy? That
would be great, I would love it! I
haven’t seen them for such a long time.”
“I know honey,” Susie said, “I will talk to Dr. Matthews, but
I’m sure it will be okay. Then
I’ll call the girl’s mothers. “
