They walked down the hall to the waiting room and sat down.
He said, "Look folks, it's not good, her heart is getting
weaker by the minute. All we
can do is pray for a donor before it's too late.
I wish I had better news, but honestly, it will take a miracle for
that to happen." Susie
thought about what Sarah had said last night and said, "Yes, a
Christmas miracle." Bill
smiled at her and said, "That's right, Susie, and with a little
faith, that just might happen." "Okay,"
said Dr. Matthews, "Lets see if our prayers get answered.
I've got to go on rounds, but I'll be back."
Bill and Susie thanked Dr. Matthews.
"Hey," he said, "I'm just doing my job, no need for
thanks, I'll see you later." Susie
said, "Bill, can you stay with Sarah for awhile?
There is something I need to do."
Bill said, "Sure Susie, I called the office and cancelled my
appointments for today so take
your time." Susie kissed
him and said, "I love you Bill, and thanks.
I will be back in a little while, if she wakes up, call me,
okay?" Bill said, "I
will honey, you just take some time for yourself and don't worry, she will
be okay."
Bill went back to Sarah's room, and Susie walked down to the chapel.
She was glad it was empty because she felt like she needed to be
alone. She walked up to the
little chapel altar and as she knelt down, she looked up towards the
picture of Jesus on the wall and said, "Okay, you've got my
attention. I'm sorry I lost
faith in you. I know it wasn't
you're fault that my parents died."
Then she cried out, "Lord, can you ever forgive me?
I love you Lord, I always have. I have just been like a stubborn
child, defying her parents. It
was just that I was hurting, Lord. I
wanted to blame someone, so I blamed you.
Please forgive me, Lord. Please
forgive me."
She felt a soft breeze blow across her face and heard a voice whisper these
words, "And a little child will lead them."
She looked up and said, "Now I understand, Lord. Now I
understand." For the
first time in fifteen years, her heart was at peace.
She knew now that God had never left her, but she had left Him, and
a little child had led her back to Him.
She sat for a while in the chapel and prayed, believing now that
her prayers would be answered. "Lord,"
she prayed, "Please, if it be your will, give Sarah a new heart for
Christmas, and let us have more time with her, Lord.
She is our life, we need her and love her, Lord.
But Lord, if it be your will to take her to heaven, I know now that
I can go on, for I know that I will see her and all my family and YOU in
heaven one day, so I leave it in your hands today, Lord.
In Jesus mighty name I pray, Amen."
About the time she finished praying, her phone rang.
It was Bill, "Susie, she's awake and her fever is down.
And Susie, they have a heart for her!"
Then Bill said, "Susie, are you there?
Did you hear me? They
have a heart!" "Yes,
I heard you. I'll be right
there, Bill." Then she
hung up the phone and cried, "Thank you, Lord.
Thank you."
It was Christmas Eve and Sarah was in surgery.
Bill and Susie paced back and forth in the waiting room.
Dr. Matthews had told them it could take a while.
"It is not a fast operation," he said, "And she is
very weak. I can't promise she
will make it through the surgery."
"She'll make it," Susie said, "I just know she
will." While they were
waiting, she told Bill what had happened in the chapel, she told him,
"Never again will I blame Him."
Bill said, "Susie I am so happy for you, I knew that one day
God would make you understand that everything happens for a reason, and we
as humans don't always understand His reasons."
A little while later Dr. Matthews came out and talked with them.
He said, "She is out of surgery, but very weak.
We lost her twice but she is stable now and in recovery.
You can see her shortly. The
next few days will tell, but I think she will be okay.
I'll be back later to check on her."
"Okay, thanks," Bill said, "We will see you
later." Bill looked at
Susie and tears were running down her face.
"We got it, Bill!" Susie cried.
"We got our Christmas miracle!"
"Yes we did, Susie, just like angel Doris said."
Susie smiled, then looked up and said, "Thank you Lord, and
thank you Mom for watching over our girl."
That Christmas brought a new
start for the Kendell family. Sarah
wasn't the only one that got a new heart.
Susie's faith was restored stronger than it had ever been.
Sarah's new heart was working great, she began to be like her old
self. It truly was a Christmas
miracle! Every year at
Christmas Bill makes sure Sarah gets to sing What Child Is This, which is
her favorite Christmas song and she never misses a note.
