Dr. Matthews came in and checked Sarah and said, "Lets get this fever
down and run some tests." Then
the nurse took her temperature again, it was 104.9
"It has been an hour," she said.
"That's not much of a difference for an hour."
Dr. Matthews said, "Give her more meds, we have to get this
fever down." He told Bill
and Susie, "I'll be back, try not to worry."
Sarah stirred in her bed and whined, "Mommy I'm cold."
"It's okay baby," Susie
said, "It's the fever, here lets put another blanket on you."
"Okay" Sarah said, and then she drifted back off to
sleep. She was in and out all
night. Susie and Bill paced
back and forth the rest of the night, afraid that any minute could be the
last that they would have with Sarah.
Bill was so worried about Susie, she'd had such a rough childhood.
She lost both her parents in a car wreck when she was a teenager.
It caused her to question her faith in God, she blamed God for the
death of her parents. It took
her a long time to believe in Him again.
Her faith was restored, but he was afraid losing Sarah would cause
all those old doubts to come back again.
Susie stood staring out the window into the night, trying to come to grips
with the fact that tonight could be the last time she would see Sarah.
She thought to herself, 'this has got to be a dream, please God,
tell me this is not going to be the last moments I spend with my baby.
Lord please don't take her.' Bill
came up behind her and put his arms around her waist, she leaned back
against him and he whispered, "I love you, Susie."
She siad, "I know Bill, I have never doubted that."
She turned around and said, "Bill, are we wrong to want to
hold onto her? We've had so
little time with her Bill. I
just don't know if I can say goodbye to her."
"I know Susie, lets pray that we will have more time, you know
she could pull through, it's not the end yet honey, lets not give up,
okay?"
Dr. Matthews came in then and asked how she was doing, "She is
restless," Susie said, "And the fever is still high."
"Why isn't it going down, Dr. Matthews?"
Susie asked. "We
are trying to find out Susie, just remember she's a fighter.
I think we may have a heart donor.
I didn't want to tell you because we are not sure yet, but I'm
hoping. I'll be back in just a
little while and let you know for sure, but right now we have to get that
fever to drop. I'll get the
nurse to check it and give her some more medication."
"Okay Dr. Matthews, and thanks," said Bill, "for
everything."
